Municipal Surveys Shows Residents Unhappy with Private Subscription
The Centre County Solid Waste Authority and Centre Region COG completed a customer satisfaction survey in 1998 designed to gauge the public's acceptance of and satisfaction with their contracted waste and recycling service. When compared to other similar studies, this survey is especially helpful for recycling and waste professionals that are struggling with the private subscription/contracted hauler issue.
The survey showed that people
were very satisfied with their service and the professionalism
of the contracted firm. Though many overestimated the cost of
their service, less than 10% were unhappy with their monthly rates.
Interestingly, almost half of the respondents could not recall
what their monthly cost was.
A similar survey done in the Blair
County Intermunicipal program, found that 96% of the respondents
in this private subscription system could recall their
monthly cost and more than three quarters of them were unhappy
with those monthly charges. Only 7% of Centre County respondents
were dissatisfied with the cost of their collection services.
The Blair County survey also showed that over 80% of the respondents
would welcome a contracted firm if monthly savings were as little
as $3 per month. Interesting stuff to pass on to elected officials
that have been apprehensive to take the leap of faith...
