Strategies for Managing Organics in Your Community

Organics recycling diverts significant resources from disposal, yet there are many opportunities for advancement in Pennsylvania. Leaf and yard trimmings are composted in countless back yards across the Commonwealth yet the public interest in new home composting programs remains strong. Nearly 500 public and private composting facilities across the Commonwealth process more than a half-million tons of organics annually, but some communities do not have convenient access for their leaf waste. Colleges and universities, prisons and supermarkets are routinely demonstrating the benefits of organics composting. Transferring these models to commercial and institutional peers is a challenge to be met.

With mandates to collect yard waste at the curbside, many communities are confronted with a number of challenges to meet these requirements. This course was intended to provide attendees with some of the tools that will help them implement or improve their programs or facilities, minimize costs, and help them better understand their composting options.
